Who Qualifies

Do You Qualify
for CDCP?

To be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, you must meet all four of the following requirements. If you're unsure, our team will help you verify your coverage before any treatment begins.

🇨🇦
Canadian Resident
You must be a Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).
💰
Income Under $90,000
Your adjusted household net income (AFNI) must be below $90,000/year based on your latest tax return.
🚫
No Private Dental Insurance
You must not have access to private or employer-sponsored dental insurance — even if you haven't used it.
📋
Filed Your Tax Return
You and your spouse (if applicable) must have filed your income tax return for the prior year with CRA.
⚠️ Important: If you have employer dental coverage and choose to opt out, you are not eligible for CDCP. Declining available coverage does not qualify you for the plan.

1. Are you a Canadian resident?
2. Is your household income under $90,000/year?

Understanding Your Costs

How Much Will
You Pay?

Your co-payment is based on your adjusted family net income (AFNI). Families under $70,000/year pay nothing — the government covers it all. Between $70,000–$89,999, you pay a percentage directly to our clinic on top of what CDCP reimburses.

Maria qualifies for full coverage. Her family's checkups, X-rays, and cleanings are completely covered by the CDCP — no out-of-pocket cost.

👨 James — Self-employed
Income: $74,000/yr
James has a 40% co-pay. For a $200 CDCP-fee cleaning, the government covers $120 and James pays $80 directly to us at the appointment.

Common Questions

CDCP FAQ

Can I use CDCP at For Your Smile Dental?
Yes — we are a registered CDCP provider. We bill Sun Life directly on your behalf. Simply let us know you're a CDCP member when you book and we'll verify your coverage before your appointment.
I have employer dental insurance — can I still qualify?
No. If you have access to private or employer dental insurance — even if you haven't used it or have chosen not to use it — you are not eligible for CDCP. Declining available coverage does not make you eligible.
What is balance billing?
Balance billing is when the dentist's standard fee exceeds the CDCP fee grid amount. You may be charged the difference. We always inform patients of any balance billing before beginning treatment so there are no surprises.
Does my income change every year for CDCP?
Yes. Your co-payment level is reassessed each year at renewal based on your most recent tax return. Your co-pay percentage may increase or decrease depending on your household income for that year.
Is root canal therapy (RCT) covered?
Yes — root canal therapy on anterior, premolar, and molar teeth is covered under the CDCP. As a CDCP provider offering AI-supported diagnostics, we can efficiently assess and treat infected teeth using your CDCP benefits.
Can my children use CDCP at your clinic?
Yes. Children under 18 are eligible for CDCP provided the household meets the income and insurance requirements. Covered services for children include exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and fillings.
What if I need a crown or dentures?
Crowns, partial dentures, and complete dentures are covered under CDCP but require preauthorization from Sun Life before treatment begins. We manage the preauthorization process on your behalf — just book a consultation and we'll take care of it.
How do I check if my CDCP coverage is active?
You can check your coverage status through your My Service Canada Account (MSCA) online. Alternatively, call us at 587-330-3000 — we can verify your active coverage status through Sun Life's system before your appointment.
Is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) covered?
GBT falls under professional cleaning and scaling, which is covered by CDCP. It's included as part of our preventive care offering. We use GBT as our preferred cleaning method — you benefit from the most advanced technique at no additional CDCP cost.
I missed the renewal deadline — what now?
If you miss the June 1, 2026 renewal deadline, your coverage ends June 30, 2026. Services received after that date will not be covered retroactively. You'll need to submit a new application when the next benefit year opens on June 2, 2026.
