What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem needs same-day care — but some conditions can become life-threatening or cause permanent damage if left untreated. Here's how to tell the difference.

🦷
Dental Abscess
A bacterial infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and tooth. Can spread to the jaw, neck or head if untreated.
⬤ Call Immediately
💥
Knocked-Out Tooth
A completely dislodged tooth. Reimplantation success drops dramatically after 60 minutes — every minute matters.
⬤ Call Immediately
🤕
Jaw / Face Swelling
Swelling that spreads to the neck or causes difficulty breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency — go to Emergency Room first.
⬤ ER + Call Us
🔨
Cracked or Fractured Tooth
Severe pain when biting or temperature sensitivity suggests a crack extending to the pulp. Needs same-day evaluation.
⬤ Same-Day Care
🩸
Uncontrolled Bleeding
Bleeding that doesn't stop after 15–20 minutes of pressure following a tooth injury or extraction requires immediate attention.
⬤ Same-Day Care
👑
Lost Filling or Crown
Exposed tooth structure is painful and vulnerable to further damage. Not immediately dangerous but should be seen same day.
⬤ Same-Day Preferred
✅ Not an Emergency — But Still Book Soon

While You Wait

First Aid Before You Reach Us

These steps can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth — or preventing an infection from spreading. Follow these while you call us on your way in.

1
💥
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time critical — act within 30 minutes
1
Pick the tooth up by the crown — never touch the root
2
Rinse gently with milk or saline — do not scrub
3
Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket gently, or
4
Store in milk, saline, or between cheek and gum
5
Call us immediately and come in within 30–60 min
⚠️ Do NOT store in tap water or dry it out — this kills the cells needed for reimplantation.
2
🦷
Severe Toothache / Abscess
Do not ignore swelling or fever
1
Rinse mouth gently with warm salt water
2
Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen preferred)
3
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
4
Do not apply heat or aspirin directly to the gum
5
Call us — and if you have swelling spreading to your neck, go to ER
⚠️ An untreated abscess can spread to the jaw, neck, and airway — this is life-threatening. Don't wait.
3
🔨
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Pain on biting = nerve may be exposed
1
Rinse your mouth with warm water
2
Save any broken tooth pieces if possible
3
Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
4
Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum
5
Avoid chewing on that side until you see us
⚠️ Cracks are not always visible. If you feel pain when biting or releasing, call us — a hidden crack can split the tooth entirely if left untreated.
4
🩸
Uncontrolled Bleeding
After extraction or trauma
1
Fold a clean gauze pad and bite down firmly
2
Maintain consistent pressure for 20–30 minutes
3
Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw
4
Avoid hot liquids, alcohol, and smoking
5
If bleeding continues beyond 60 min, call us or go to ER
⚠️ Slight oozing for 24 hours after extraction is normal. Bright red flowing blood that won't stop is not — call us immediately.
5
👑
Lost Crown or Filling
Exposed tooth needs protection
1
Keep the crown or filling if you find it
2
Clean the crown gently — do not use super glue
3
Temporarily re-seat the crown with dental cement (available at pharmacies)
4
Avoid chewing on that side
5
Call us to book a same-day or next-day appointment
⚠️ A tooth without its crown is vulnerable to cracking. Temporary cement is a short-term fix — see us within 24–48 hours.
6
🤕
Jaw / Facial Trauma
From sport, accident or fall
1
If jaw may be fractured, stabilise gently — do not force movement
2
Apply cold compress to reduce swelling
3
If unconscious or difficulty breathing — call 911 first
4
Go to nearest ER for suspected jaw fracture
5
Call us after ER for follow-up dental assessment
⚠️ Always wear a mouthguard during contact sports. Ask us about custom-fit sport guards at your next visit.

What You'll Pay

Emergency Care Costs & Coverage

We never let cost be a barrier to emergency treatment — and we'll always discuss fees with you before starting. Here's what to know about paying for emergency dental care.

🏥
Alberta Health Care
Alberta Health Care does not cover dental services. Emergency dental care is separate from provincial health coverage — this is why CDCP and private insurance matter.
🔒
Private Insurance
Most private dental plans include emergency coverage. Bring your insurance card and we'll direct-bill wherever possible. We accept all major insurance carriers.
💳
No Insurance?
We offer flexible payment options including Visa, Mastercard, Interac e-Transfer, and payment plans. We'll discuss all costs before treatment begins — no surprises.
✅ CDCP Accepted Here
Emergency Care May Be Covered by CDCP
If you're a Canadian Dental Care Plan member, emergency dental assessments and many treatments are covered. We're a registered CDCP provider — we verify your coverage and bill Sun Life directly so you only pay your co-pay (if any).
  • Emergency oral exam & assessment
  • Emergency X-rays & AI diagnostics

Common Questions

Emergency FAQ

What should I do first when I have a dental emergency?
Call us immediately at 587-330-3000. Our team will triage your situation over the phone, give you first-aid instructions, and get you booked for a same-day appointment. If you're experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe facial swelling affecting your airway — call 911 first.
Can you really see me the same day?
Yes. We reserve same-day emergency slots specifically for urgent cases. Call as early in the day as possible to secure your spot. In most cases we can see you within hours of your call. Our team will always tell you honestly if same-day isn't possible and help you manage symptoms in the meantime.
How long do I have to save a knocked-out tooth?
The best chance of reimplantation is within 30 minutes. Survival rates drop significantly after 60 minutes. Store the tooth in milk, saline, or between your cheek and gum — never tap water or dry storage. Call us immediately and come straight in.
Will emergency treatment hurt?
Our priority is your comfort. We use effective local anaesthesia before any procedure. In most cases, the anaesthesia works very quickly and you'll feel little to nothing during treatment. Many patients feel dramatic relief almost immediately once the source of infection or pain is addressed.
Is a dental abscess dangerous?
Yes — a dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread to the jaw, neck, and head. In rare cases, untreated abscesses can become life-threatening. If you have swelling spreading to your neck or difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest Emergency Room immediately, then call us for dental follow-up.
Do I need to be an existing patient?
No. We welcome new emergency patients. You do not need to have been seen here before. Simply call us, describe your symptoms, and we'll get you in. Our AI-supported diagnostic process means we can build a full clinical picture quickly even if we don't have prior records for you.
Should I go to the ER or the dentist for a dental emergency?
For most dental emergencies — toothache, knocked-out tooth, lost crown, broken tooth — come directly to us. We're better equipped than an ER to treat dental issues. Go to the ER first if you have: severe swelling spreading to your neck or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever with swelling, or suspected jaw fracture. Then call us for dental follow-up.
Can I use my CDCP for an emergency visit?
Yes. Emergency dental assessments, X-rays, extractions, and root canal treatment are all covered by CDCP. When you call, let us know you're a CDCP member and we'll verify your coverage before you arrive. You only pay your income-based co-pay (if any) — we handle the rest.
